Vanity and Special Plates - there is an
annual charge for these plates. They renew on a yearly basis.
The law regarding the Transfer of plates
from one vehicle to another has changed.
As of June 25, 1998, the new law
provides:
1. A person who is at least 18 years of
age who Transfers ownership of a registered motor vehicle or Trailer to
another person OR who loses possession of the vehicle; and
2. who intends to Transfer the plates to
a newly-acquired new or used vehicle of the same type and having the
same number of wheels, may
3. attach the number plates previously
assigned to the old vehicle to the newly-acquired vehicle and operate
the newly acquired vehicle or Trailer for a period of seven days from
the date of Transfer.
While operating the newly-acquired
vehicle during this period, the operator must carry:
1. the bill of sale (title) indicating
the Registration number to be Transferred from the former vehicle to
the newly-acquired vehicle, and
2. while the law does not require it,
The Registry Strongly recommends that the operator carry a copy of the
title to the old vehicle or some other type of documentation to prove
that the operator has Transferred ownership of the old vehicle.
REMEMBER..... The original vehicle must no longer be in your
possession in order to use the plate on the newly acquired vehicle.
